About Gabriella Kountourides
DPhil student, Oxford University
I’m a PhD candidate in the department of Anthropology at St John’s College, University of Oxford. I’m looking into why people feel different premenstrual symptoms (PMS). I am interested in this as the experience of PMS can vary, both between individual people and even across populations. But the causes aren’t fully understood. I also investigate the effects of Covid-19 on female reproductive health.

Education and empowerment

Between my masters and PhD, I helped bring the Natural History Museum's research to the public by teaching school groups as a science educator. My role involved distilling complex scientific research into understandable chunks to catch the imagination of children and adults alike.

I’m passionate about empowering women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects. I’ve hosted radio shows about gender and science during my time at university, as well as acting as a STEM mentor.
